Challenges in evaluating obesity care

Individual hospitals currently have insight into revision rates within their own populations. However, a holistic evaluation of the lasting effects of this care requires an analysis over several centers. Secure data processing as a basis
DATO is a quality register of the Dutch Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (DSMBS), in which metabolic surgery in patients with severe obesity has been monitored since 2015. More than 70,000 patients have been registered with them to date.
In 2022, DSMBS started a study, using a new method, to look at the long-term results and costs of metabolic and bariatric surgery in patients with severe obesity. This included connecting data from a health insurer, data processing organizations and a national organization of medical specialists representing 20 hospitals.
